No one likes having inventory problems.
It can sneak up on you. Steady flow of sales, then in one day your inventory drops to zero.
It could be a competitor doing something dodgy, or mis-management from yourself.
Even worse when your stock is already discounted, and you just lost a ton of units for nothing.
As an Amazon seller, your inventory is precious. Learn how to set max order quantity on your products to protect your investment.
Situations You Should Set Max Order Quantity
The most common reason to limit your max order quantity is when you’re running a high-value percentage off discount.
While you can prevent codes being used over and over by creating single-use promo codes, there’s still potential for abuse. Since the promotion gives customers a percentage discount, customers can apply it for multiple units in the same order.
Say you’re running a 90% off product launch. Someone – could be a competitor, or a hijacker – could take one single-use code and buy out your whole inventory.
Maybe the buyer turns around and sells them all for full price, on Amazon or another platform.
Amazon used to allow you to create a “$ off” promotion. This was a good solution to limit abuse, as it would not apply any discount above that value. However Amazon removed this option in November 2016.
Other situations you may want to consider limiting your max order quantity:
-
You’re running low on stock and don’t want to sell out
-
You suspect or worry about fraud/return abuse (commonly on high-price items)
-
You want to stop people using the “999 item” trick to spy on your inventory
So here’s how to set a max order quantity limit.
How to Set Max Order Quantity on Amazon
On your Seller Central Dashboard, find “Inventory”, and select “Manage Inventory”.
From the Manage Inventory screen, find the listing you would like to limit, and click “Edit”.
On the next screen, select the “Orders” tab. Scroll down, and near the bottom you will find Max Order Quantity.
Set your desired quantity, and hit “Save and Close”.
To double check your product limit has been applied properly, try browsing as a buyer, and see how many products you can add to your cart. If it has been done right, you should only be able to select as many as your limit.
If you’re setting a max order limit for a promotion, don’t forget to reset the limit after the promotion’s done. The more products you can sell at full price, the better!
Additionally, if you’re running a promo campaign with LandingCube, don’t forget you can set a limit on how many promo codes can be given out each day.
Set your daily promo code limit at the last step before publishing your campaign. Turn on “Daily promo code limit”, and enter how many you want to give out at most each day.
